Why a garden room with a toilet?

Do you need extra space that feels fully usable, not just an occasional outbuilding?

A garden room with a toilet gives you exactly that. A private, self-contained space just steps from your home, with the comfort and convenience of your own facilities.

If you’ve ever found yourself constantly walking back to the main house, or wishing your garden space was more practical and independent, then a garden room with a toilet is the natural next step.

It adds convenience and transforms how long you can comfortably spend in your space.

A garden room with a toilet is also a smart way to extend your living space without the disruption and cost of a traditional home extension. So whether it’s a home office, gym, studio, guest space or multi-use room, adding a toilet makes it feel self-sufficient and ready for everyday use.

A modern restroom seamlessly connected to a garden room, featuring separate toilet and sink areas. It boasts wood and tile flooring, white walls, and a small window above the sink, inviting natural light to enhance the tranquil ambiance.

Planning a garden room with plumbing?

FAQs

Why do people add a toilet or shower room to a garden room?

Many clients choose to include bathroom facilities for ultimate comfort and convenience. Whether it is a WC room or a full shower room, it makes the garden room feel more usable, self-contained, and suited to longer periods of use. Eden manages everything from design through to water and waste connections and final finishing, so the entire process is fully taken care of.

How do you connect water and waste?

We connect to the mains sewer system wherever possible. If a mains connection is not available, we can discuss compliant eco toilet solutions depending on site conditions. All groundworks and connections are fully managed as part of our turnkey service.

Can I add a shower or full bathroom as well?

Yes many customers choose to upgrade their garden room into a full bathroom or en suite-style space.

We can design:

  • Toilet-only cloakrooms
  • Toilet and basin washrooms
  • Full shower rooms or wet rooms
  • Combined bathroom and multi-use spaces

Everything is fully bespoke, so the layout is designed around how you want to use your garden room. We do not typically install baths in garden rooms. Most clients opt for a WC room or a shower room, as these are more space efficient and better suited to year-round use.

Do I need planning permission for a garden room with toilet

Most garden rooms with a toilet are classed as outbuildings and usually fall under permitted development, meaning planning permission is not normally required. This depends on the size and height of the building, where it’s positioned, and whether your property is in a conservation area or is a listed building. Adding a toilet does not automatically mean planning permission is needed, although Building Regulations may apply for plumbing and drainage connections.

If your garden room exceeds permitted development limits, such as being over 2.5m high near a boundary or intended for residential use, planning permission may be required. While it’s the homeowner’s responsibility to check permissions for their property, we’re always happy to guide you through the process if needed.

How does waste from a garden room toilet work?

The waste system depends on the setup chosen for your garden room.

  • Mains sewer connection: connects directly to your home drainage system if access allows
  • Septic tank system: ideal for properties without easy access to mains drainage
  • Eco toilet systems: self-contained or composting solutions with minimal installation work

We’ll help you choose the right option based on access, ground conditions and budget before any work begins.
